Coming back in to La Paz we were greeted by old friends from Kanga and Voyager, it felt like coming home! We spent ten days here hanging out, working on the boat and catching up on PG&E work back in internet-land.
It was very hot so we finally set up the shade tree sun shades – still didn’t look as good as the picture the former owners took so no photographic record here, but they did indeed help. And we took time off to have a wonderful anniversary lunch, hang with old friends and even make a new one. And the boys got a last shot of Spanish at Se Habla La Paz.
We left La Paz on Monday the 23rd, Patti sick but the rest of us in good shape for the easy motor-sail to Los Muertos. No manta show this time, but a decent meal in the restaurant and great weather.
And then it was off to Los Frailes, which we were looking forward to for the incredible hand-made limonadas and delicious snorkeling. Did not disappoint on either score, though the restaurant was closed for food due to the owner’s health problems (and the boys were actually chased back to the beach by a pair of beautiful horses that we met on the long walk back).
We missed Puerto Los Cabos at San Jose del Cabo on the way down (actually we just wanted to get as far away from cities as possible after Cabo SL), but pulled in this time, and really liked it. Quite a hike into town from the marina, but there is a small village around the marina with a good tienda, a few decent restaurants, a hotel with a pool whose proprietor we befriended – and a brand new ice cream/agua fresca stand. And somehow we always got rides into town, and sometimes back as well. The boys got haircuts, Jan got more supplies and read the excellent (if somewhat scary) Baja Bash book by the PLC harbormaster. And we made new friends, a lesbian couple who are doing an ambling circumnavigation and introduced us to the concept of a “Baja waltz” instead of bash.
After three days here we heard of a possible weather window – and had 96 hours to get the boat above 24 degrees latitude or be out of insurance – so we filled up the tanks and jerry jugs to the brim and headed off to CSL and the passage North, our next post.
